These stories were collected between 1962 and 1986 in many parts of the Midlands, North and Scotland from Gypsies and other Traditional Travellers.

The families who told them included the Cannings, Finneys, Jameses, Northern Lees, Maughans, Millers, Mullens, Prices, Shaws, Smiths, Taylors, Townsleys and Wards.

Stories like these were told round the fire to entertain and to teach young people life lessons and, in bleak times, to give hope.
