Citizenship through secondary English

This text aims to define the contribution that English can make to citizenship education and democracy, and which, indeed, it must make if citizenship education is to be effective in a crowded secondary curriculum.

It addresses both the ways in which the content and pedagogy of the English curriculum can contribute to the teaching of citizenship and democracy and ways in which the proposed content of the curriculum for citizenship and democracy can be addressed through these areas.Theoretical discussion is used to provide a platform for the presentation of tried-and-tested practical teaching suggestions.

Chapters analyze various issues in relation to citizenship and democracy including: oracy; drama; critical reading; literature; cultural studies and the media; writing; and language study.

The book proposes a revised content of the English curriculum together with appropriate assessment methods.
