The Second International Symposium on Senna provided many new insights into the complex mechanisms of action of senna laxatives.

In this publication, several international short- and long-term experimental studies are presented.

These indicate that there is no genotoxic or cancerogenic risk connected with senna, a fact which seems to be confirmed by the clinical data now available.

Further studies on chronic administration question the concerns often raised with prolonged treatment of anthranoids.

In summary, the pharmacological, toxicological, pharmacokinetic and clinical data presented in this publication indicate that senna is a safe and effective drug which may be used, if necessary, for longer periods of time.
