Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are sisters with opposing temperaments - Elinor is prudent, rational and responsible; Marianne is passionate, excitable and emotional.

When Marianne is abandoned by an unscrupulous suitor, she is disconsolate, driving herself to a serious illness.
