These papers illustrate the challenges facing the process safety professional in Europe when implementing standards and legal requirements in the area of explosion protection.

The conference marks the 10-year anniversary of EPSC.

The aims of the conference were to provide practical understanding of recent standards and forthcoming legislation in the area of explosion protection and in part, offers a follow up to the previous EPSC conference on Safety Integrity held in 1999.

The proceedings cover the following areas: review of experience of implementing IEC 61508 and associated standards; understanding and preparation for compliance with the coming ATEX legislation; and the relationship between IEC61508 and ATEX 100 and 118.

This event was the third international public conference organized by EPSC.

It meets the EPSC's first objective of providing advice on the latest available acceptable safety practices.

EPSC is an international industry-funded organization, which exists to provide an independent technical focus for process safety in Europe. It is a cooperative project administered by the Institution of Chemical Engineers on behalf of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).
