Infrastructure Embankments : Condition Appraisal and Remedial Treatment

Embankments perform an important function in the efficient operation of an infrastructure network, whether it is railway, highway or waterway, and they typically form 30 per cent of all transport infrastructure.

Embankments require maintenance and the need to undertake it has become increasingly apparent as the materials within these structures age.

This can lead to instability, which has both economic and safety implications.

This publication provides guidelines on good practice for the appraisal of infrastructure embankment condition and describes the remedial treatments available.
