Mike Nichols directs this comedy set in 1920s America which follows two hustlers as they attempt to steal an heiress's fortune.

The Mann Act prevents the transportation of women across state lines for 'immoral' purposes, a situation that puts philandering Nicky (Warren Beatty) in a fix with his upper-class girlfriend Freddy (Stockard Channing) as he tries to get them both to Los Angeles from New York.

His solution is to have Freddy marry his friend Oscar (Jack Nicholson), but problems arise when both men find themselves becoming rivals for her affections.

When an exasperated Freddy decides to leave her fortune to charity, the two con men plot to murder her and inherit the cash, but neither of them expected Freddy to be quite so difficult to kill...
