This is a historical novel. The story centres on the years leading up to the French Revolution and culminates in the Jacobin Reigh of Terror.

It tells the story of two men, Charle Darnay and Sydney Carton, who look similar but are very different in traits.

The novel is set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution.
