JavaBeans : Programming for the Object Web

See all formats and editions

From Wiley authors Orfali and Harkey comes a book (with CD) on Java Beans, an important component of the Java strategy.

They have, in addition, been commissioned by JavaSoft, IBM, Symantec and Apple to critique Java Beans. Because Beans are based on reusable components or as with Java, reusable applets, Beans are positioned to replace the current use and design of applets.

With Java Beans, a button or icon on one Web page can control functions in another Web page.

For example, if you have a Web site that provides banking services, one page on the site might show interest rates over the last six months depicted with a graph.

On the page are two Java Bean components: one that retrieves the interest rate data and another that charts the data to make the graph.

The key is that they constantly interact and can be re-used. "Java Beans" brings together distributed objects, components and the Internet: CORBA and Java Beans; Java Beans and JDBC; how to interoperate Java Beans with ActiveX and OpenDoc; how Java Beans fit into Intranets and Extranets; and visual tools for Java Beans such as Symantec's Visual Cafe, Borland's Latte and Marimba's Bongo and Castenet.

The CD features sourcecode for the 10 Java Beans applications that are included in the book, links to Java Beans resources and tools and links to changes to the Java Beans API.
