Documents on British Policy Overseas - Series 1 : The United Nations: Iran, Cold War and World Organisation, 1946-47

This latest collection of documents from the British archives focuses upon Britain's role in the United Nations during 1946-47.

It records the disappointment felt by British diplomats and statesmen over Soviet conduct in the Security Council and their efforts to remedy some of the shortcomings of the new World Organization.

The documents include material from previously unpublished papers of the Joint Intelligence sub-Committee and the Cabinet's Official Committee on Atomic Energy.

Subjects covered include: the Red Army's occupation of northern Iran; oil policy in the Middle East; the British military presence in Greece, Indonesia and the Levant; reactions to Franco's Spain; human rights and Indo-South African dispute; the International Refugee Organisation; attempts to reform the use of the veto; the Military Staff Committee; the control of atomic energy; and international disarmament.
