Web Development with HTML5 and CSS

Web Development with HTML5 and CSS assumes no previous coding experience and walks readers through the workflow of coding responsive and accessible web sites using current coding standards and best practices.

The book is separated into three units, each culminating in a unit project.

A preface and addendum are also included to get readers up and running with a development environment and explore JavaScript.

The book is both Mac and Windows friendly. Introduction: Setting up Your ComputerThe book's preface guides students through setting up their work environment with Brackets (a free and open-source code editor). Unit 1: HTML BasicsTopics include headings and paragraphs, phrase elements and special characters, images, hyperlinks, lists, audio, video, and validating code.

Also included are coverage of site planning, web hosting and web servers, separation of concerns, and the importance of developer-friendly code. Unit 2: Structuring and Organizing ContentThis unit covers advanced HTML topics including structuring content with HTML semantic elements, tables, forms, accessibility, and legacy support. Unit 3: Cascading StylesheetsUnit 3 covers CSS topics from basic styling to media queries and responsive design utilizing flexbox, fluid images, and fluid text sizing. Addendum: Introduction to JavaScriptThe addendum offers an introduction to JavaScript where readers learn to protect email addresses from spambots. Each Chapter presents topics with accompanying activities so students get hands-on coding practice in bite-sized digestible chunks as they read.

Each coding Chapter ends with the following activities (presented in increasing difficulty) to offer more practice:Study Guide summarizes all code covered in the Chapter and a list outlining what readers should be able to do after completionTear-Our pencil-and-paper activity to stimulate the reticular activating system (RAS), which is proven to increase focus, retention, and overall cognitive processes. Guided Practice a single web site that readers continue to build throughout the book so they can see how a web site progresses.

These activities provide a high degree of ""hand-holding"". Update an Old Site a different web site each Chapter; readers are provided with code for an existing site which they need to update and optimize, putting best practices and current standards into play. From a Comp a different web site each Chapter; readers are presented with a visual representation of a site (a comp) and code what they see from scratch. On Your Own readers develop their own web site from the ground up throughout the book, adding on to it each Chapter.
