This book evokes one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in the world.

Its richness and diversity are captured here in a series of skilful, atmospheric paintings.

These include panoramas and detailed views, and as well as the university buildings themselves, there are scenes of university life, the meadows and bustling streetscapes of the modern city.

Each picture is accompanied by an authoritative text which identifies the buildings and gives details of their histories.

Hubert Pragnell is a tutor for the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education and a member of Kellogg College.

He has written and illustrated a number of books on various aspects of architecture, including industrial buildings, as well as architectural plans of towns and historic buildings, including Westminster Abbey and Canterbury Cathedral. He works largely in watercolour, pastel and pen and ink and has exhibited widely, including with the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour at the Mall Gallery.
