Recent advances in knowledge of the immune response in the skin have enabled the development of new paradigms for the pathogenesis of atopic and contact dermatitis and new therapeutic strategies for these diseases.

The first section in this volume presents information concerning the immune function of skin cells and epidermal cytokines and the role of mast cell-endothelial cell interactions in cutaneous inflammation.

In light of these new findings, further sections discuss the pathogenesis and pharmacology of allergic contact and atopic dermatitis as well as current and future therapies for these two important diseases.

Drawing the conclusion that the best approach to treating these chronic inflammatory skin diseases is by modulation of the immune system, this book should be of benefit to dermatologists, immunologists and pharmacologists.
