Early civilizations in Nigeria, such as the Nok culture, which began approximately 1500 B.C., can be traced back to the country's first occupants, whose remains have been dated to at least 13,000 B.C.

The history of Nigeria can be traced back to these early civilizations.

The area that is now known as Nigeria was formerly home to a great number of ancient African civilizations, including the Kingdom of Nri, the Benin Empire, and the Oyo Empire, amongst others.

Christianity was introduced to Nigeria in the 15th century by Augustinian and Capuchin monks from Portugal.

Islam was brought to Nigeria during the 11th century by the Bornu Empire between the years 1068 and 1385 AD, while Hausa States brought it around 1385 AD.

Both religions arrived in Nigeria during the 11th century. In addition, a portion of the territory was controlled by the Songhai Empire.

The Atlantic slave trade got its start in the region that is now known as Nigeria.

The first Nigerian port that European slave traders utilized was Badagry, which is a coastal harbor.

European slave traders began arriving in the region in the 15th century to purchase enslaved Africans as part of the Atlantic slave trade, which got its start in that region.

Local merchants supplied them with slaves, which exacerbated tensions between the various ethnic groups residing in the region and threw established trading patterns along the Trans-Saharan route into disarray.
