Young Turks and Kurds : A Set of 'Invisible' Disadvantaged Groups

This report draws on a study of three disadvantaged groups of young Turkish Kurds, Turks or Turkish Cypriots, and Bangladeshis in Haringey - an economically deprived area with a multiethnic population - and considers how they experience the transition from youth to adulthood.

It explores their feelings about their future prospects and examines how their aspirations are differentiated on the basis of their cultural background and their relationship with the mainstream society.

Based on a survey of 250 young people, together with focus group discussions and interviews with professionals, community representatives and the young people themselves, the report compares the experiences of the different Turkish groups, about whom very little is known.

It demonstrates the inadequacy of a "white/non-white" model of ethnicity and outlines some of the complexities of urban ethnic identities today.
