The Scottish painter and draughtsman Sir David Wilkie (1785-1841) created unusual techniques in developing the genre of "low-life." His portrayals of the poems of Robert Burns (1759-1796) included "The Refusal in 1814", and "The Cottar's Saturday Night of 1837".

These two subjects by Burns differed greatly, and Wilkie, at different times in his career, treated them as such.

This work includes twenty-nine full-page illustrations, most of which are in full color.
