A student of Clementi and C. F. Abel, Johann Baptist Cramer was a prominent concert pianist (particularly admired for his artful improvisations), and pedagogue.

His multi-faceted musical career included the composition of 124 skillfully crafted sonatas, nine piano concertos, and numerous pieces for the amateur musician, as well as the establishment of a music publishing business.

Cramer's oeuvre is divided into twelve groups (arranged chronologically within each group); each citation includes an incipit, a diplomatic rendering of the title-page of the first edition and/or autograph manuscript, and a date of the source (with an indication of the means by which that date was established).
