The purpose of this study was to examine Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) nuclear facilities generator protection and recommend a protective scheme that included the industry recommendations while reducing single point failure potential and maintaining generator reliability.

Various literature was reviewed to determine the recommended protection required for today's operating generators.

A presentation of the case study, TVA nuclear facilities, details the current protection provided for each in service generator.

Findings revealed that complete generator protection, as recommended in industry standards, was not installed.

The consequence of the limited protection was detailed, showing the financial risk taken by not implementing recommended generator protection.

Finally, a recommendation of an alternate protection scheme, using three digital multifunction relays, is presented.
